Occupy Boardwalk
Background: “We are the 99%”. Frustrated with the wealth disparity and how the 1% seems to own and influence everything, protesters took to Zuccotti Park on 2011 September 17 to begin what eventually became known Occupy Wall Street. That movement inspired this game, which I decided to borrow for our enjoyment. Here, all of you shall take on the role of the 1%.
Objective: Keep the most money and keep out the 99%
Set-up: The Dealer will evenly distribute $15,000 between the players regardless of property ownership. The Dealer shall also distribute random title deed cards (excluding utilities and railroads) from the Monopoly board game to each player so that they have an equal number (for info on your deeds assigned, see monopoly.wikia.com/wiki/Property ). Extra properties will be set aside, starting at Boardwalk, then Park Place, as necessary.
Your current funds and property ownership will be private; the number of protesters on each property and cumulative tax collected shall be public.
Gameplay: There are 10 turns each lasting 48h. Because you’re rich with lots of property and money, you have a responsibility to ensure the public good, so please pay some taxes. PM the Dealer with your generous contribution.
Every turn, the Dealer wants a total of all the contribution sent in by the players to equal at least $1000. If the total comes up short, the difference becomes debt which is added to the next turn. So if the Dealer gets $800, he wants $1200 the next turn. If the total is more than $1000, it pays towards the next round. So if the Dealer gets $1300, he only wants $700 the next round. If the Dealer gets enough to pay for the next round(s), we'll skip straight to the round when players owe taxes again, paying out any Unoccupied Bonuses from the skipped turns.
If the Dealer failed to collect enough tax, then for every $50 short, the Dealer shall add a Protester to each player on one of their properties (priority: fewest protesters, then on your most expensive properties). The shortfall must be at least $50. So if the Dealer receives $950, every player will get a protester. If the shortfall is $49 or less, say $951, no protester. If a property has at least three protesters, it is Occupied and they cannot be removed. If 12 properties have been Occupied, the government will crack down the 1% and all players lose.
To remove Protesters, pay a separate expense in your PM to the Dealer during the turn according to the title deed. So, if you have one protester, look at the pay for “With 1 House”, and if you have two protesters, look at the pay for “With 2 Houses”. If you have two protesters on a property, you will remove them simultaneously. Please specify your expense(s).
Unoccupied Bonuses. At the start of each turn, for every unoccupied property you have, you shall receive the lower of $10 or 1% of the "hotel rent" rounded down (look for "With Hotel") as "payment" from the local big businesses for your "hard work". So if you have St. James Place unoccupied, you will receive $9. Even if the property has a protester or two, you will receive the payment so long as it remains unoccupied.
Endgame: The Dealer will announce the funds remaining to each player. Whoever has the most money wins!
Inactivity: the Dealer will announce you as such at the start of the next turn. Three strikes and the Dealer will distribute your funds evenly to the remaining players (keeping any leftover). The properties will be revealed to the public. Properties will also continue accruing protesters as if the player was still in the game, but other players may pay to remove the protesters as normal. You cannot split the cost of a single expense with another player (like paying $45+45 for the $90 to remove 2 protesters on Oriental Avenue).
Questions asked so far, readdressed to the rule changes.
Which Monopoly Board? The original US, but the Dealer will maintain a property listing.
Overpayment >$2000: If the Dealer receives $2001 in first round, the Dealer needs nothing in second round and $999 in third round. The second round will be skipped, but the bonus for unoccupied properties will be awarded for the second round.
Do properties count towards funds? No
Can we trade properties? No
Can we pay off other people's protesters? Only for players who have left the game due to inactivity.
Shortage on final tax: Nothing in particular happens if <$45
$15,000: It is split, not each person getting $15,000. So 3p = $5000 per player
Player count: There is a 5p cap.
Protester Placement: As stated in the rules, the Dealer adds the next protester to the property with the fewest protesters, then to the most expensive property. Players have no say in where protesters go, except for removal.
When to pay off the protesters? Done at the same time as your taxes. Please remember to specify your expense.
Tie in funds at game conclusion? The game result is a draw.
Since we have a few players, I figured that we might as well have a mini-game in the meantime. This thread will be for sign-ups, questions, and related discussion once the game is underway. If there is enough interest (3+ players), we will announce a starting date.
We are almost ready to begin the mini-game! Please review the game rules and note the following.
